The goal of LiteCraft Shader is to transform Minecraft into a more realistic, immersive, and cinematic experience while preserving its original block-based art style.
The ultimate objective is to make Minecraft look natural during the day, spectacular at sunset, beautiful at night, and significantly more realistic around rivers, lakes, and oceans.
1. Overall Vision and Main Objectives
LiteCraft Shader should deliver the following features:
Realistic lighting while preserving Minecraft's original visual identity.
Dynamic sunlight that changes throughout the day.
Natural blue skies with atmospheric depth.
Volumetric clouds with realistic shapes, lighting, and shadows.
Transparent water with animated waves.
Environmental reflections on water surfaces.
Cinematic sunrises and sunsets.
A bright, detailed moon with a soft atmospheric glow.
Natural-looking stars and optional Milky Way effects.
Soft, detailed shadows that change with the sun's position.
Improved lighting inside caves and underground environments.
Atmospheric fog in forests, mountains, and distant landscapes.
Enhanced rain, thunderstorms, and snowy environments.
Cinematic color grading and carefully controlled bloom.
Multiple quality settings for different hardware configurations.
Performance optimization for older graphics cards.
LiteCraft Shader should prioritize visual quality without unnecessarily sacrificing performance.
2. Realistic Lighting System
Lighting is one of the most important components of LiteCraft Shader.
The goal is to make the environment feel three-dimensional by improving the interaction between light, surfaces, shadows, and atmospheric conditions.
2.1 Dynamic Sunlight
Sunlight should change naturally according to the time of day.
During midday:
Use bright, natural daylight.
Maintain balanced highlights and shadows.
Preserve the original colors of blocks.
Avoid excessive brightness that destroys surface details.
During sunrise:
Introduce warm golden light.
Gradually transition the sky from dark blue to orange and pale yellow.
Introduce warm orange, golden, pink, and reddish tones.
Illuminate clouds according to their position relative to the sun.
Create longer shadows.
Add subtle reflections of sunlight across water surfaces.
During cloudy weather:
Reduce direct sunlight.
Use softer environmental lighting.
Create more subtle shadows.
Slightly reduce overall contrast.
All lighting transitions should be smooth, without sudden changes in brightness or color.
2.2 Indirect Lighting
Indirect lighting simulates light that reaches surfaces after bouncing off other objects.
For example, sunlight can illuminate the ground, and some of that light can contribute to the brightness of nearby walls.
This can improve:
Interior lighting.
Cave environments.
Shaded areas beneath trees.
The appearance of buildings.
The visual separation between surfaces.
Accurate global illumination can be computationally expensive. LiteCraft Shader should therefore use lightweight approximations for lower-end systems and more advanced techniques where supported.
2.3 Artificial Light Sources
Artificial light sources should produce warm, localized illumination.
Examples include:
Torches.
Lanterns.
Lava.
Glowstone.
Other luminous blocks.
Torchlight should have a warm orange appearance, while lava should produce stronger orange and reddish illumination.
Light intensity should decrease with distance from the source.
Where supported by the rendering system, moving light sources should also affect nearby surfaces.
3. Realistic Sky Rendering
The sky should be one of LiteCraft Shader's most visually impressive features.
It should have atmospheric depth, natural color transitions, and lighting that responds to the time of day and weather.
3.1 Daytime Sky
During the day:
The horizon should have a lighter blue color.
The upper sky should have a deeper blue tone.
The transition between colors should be smooth.
Distant terrain should blend naturally into the atmosphere.
The sky should not appear as a flat, uniformly colored background.
Atmospheric scattering can be used to approximate the way sunlight interacts with the atmosphere.
This helps produce a more natural appearance near the horizon.
3.2 Sunrise and Sunset Sky
The sky should gradually transition through several colors.
Sky Region
Suggested Colors
Near the sun
Golden yellow and warm orange
Near the horizon
Orange, pink, and soft red
Middle sky
Pink, violet, and muted purple
Upper sky
Deep blue transitioning into dark blue
Cloud shadows
Muted purple and gray
These colors should blend naturally rather than appearing as separate bands.
3.3 Sun Rendering
The sun should have a clearly defined shape and a subtle atmospheric glow.
Its appearance should change according to the time of day.
Features should include:
A visible sun disk.
A soft glow around the sun.
Warm coloration near sunrise and sunset.
Controlled brightness during midday.
Smooth transitions as the sun moves across the sky.
The glow must not become so intense that it obscures nearby clouds or washes out the entire image.
4. Volumetric Clouds
Clouds should have realistic depth, volume, lighting, and movement.
Flat cloud layers should be replaced or enhanced with more detailed cloud structures where the rendering system allows it.
4.1 Cloud Shape and Structure
Clouds should:
Have visible volume.
Feature irregular, natural-looking edges.
Contain both illuminated and shaded regions.
Respond to sunlight direction.
Maintain convincing depth at different viewing distances.
Clouds should not look like solid white blocks or uniformly colored objects.
Their internal shading should help communicate their thickness and shape.
4.2 Cloud Lighting
During the day, illuminated cloud surfaces should appear white or slightly warm, while shaded areas should appear light gray.
During sunset:
Sun-facing edges should become golden.
Lower cloud regions may become orange or reddish.
Distant clouds may develop pink and violet tones.
Thick cloud interiors should remain darker.
Cloud colors should respond smoothly to changes in sunlight.
4.3 Cloud Animation
Clouds should move continuously and smoothly across the sky.
Movement should depend on the weather conditions.
Calm weather should feature slow cloud movement.
Windy weather should feature faster movement.
Storms should feature denser clouds and stronger movement.
Animation should avoid sudden jumps, visible texture repetition, or abrupt changes in cloud shape.
4.4 Cloud Shadows
Where technically feasible, clouds should cast shadows on the terrain.
For example, when a large cloud passes between the sun and the ground, the affected landscape should gradually become darker.
Cloud shadows should move smoothly and should not cause distracting flickering.
Because this feature can be expensive, it should be optional or simplified in lower-quality settings.
5. Realistic Water Rendering
Water should be one of LiteCraft Shader's signature features.
The objective is to create water that appears transparent, reflective, animated, and naturally integrated into the surrounding environment.
5.1 Water Transparency
Water should reveal parts of the environment beneath its surface.
Possible visible details include:
Underwater stone blocks.
Sand and gravel.
Aquatic vegetation.
The bottom of shallow rivers.
Underwater terrain.
Shallow water should generally appear clearer than deep water.
Deep water should gradually become darker and may develop blue or green-blue tones.
Transparency must remain visually consistent with the depth of the water and the available lighting.
5.2 Animated Waves
Water should feature smooth, continuous wave movement.
The wave system should support:
Small waves on calm surfaces.
More noticeable waves across large bodies of water.
Multiple wave directions.
Dynamic highlights caused by changing surface angles.
Smooth animation without excessive distortion.
Waves should not make the water look like jelly, plastic, or an unstable surface.
The animation should remain subtle enough to preserve Minecraft's recognizable visual style.
5.3 Environmental Reflections
Water should reflect surrounding objects as accurately as the rendering method allows.
Potential reflections include:
The sky.
Clouds.
The sun.
Mountains.
Trees.
Buildings.
Nearby light sources.
Higher-quality settings can use more advanced reflection techniques, while lower-quality settings can use simpler approximations.
The reflection method should be selected according to the capabilities of the rendering pipeline and the available hardware.
5.4 Sunlight Reflections
When sunlight hits the water, small bright highlights should appear across the moving surface.
These highlights should change naturally as the waves move.
During sunset, the water should display a warm, golden reflection extending toward the viewer where the viewing angle permits it.
This effect should be especially attractive across lakes, rivers, and oceans.
5.5 Underwater Effects
When the player enters the water:
The overall image should adopt a subtle underwater color.
Visibility should decrease with distance.
Distant objects should become less distinct.
Lighting should appear softer.
The water surface above the player should remain visible.
Underwater effects should enhance immersion without making navigation unnecessarily difficult.
6. Cinematic Sunrises and Sunsets
Sunrises and sunsets should be among LiteCraft Shader's most distinctive visual features.
The lighting, sky, clouds, and water should work together to create a coherent cinematic scene.
6.1 Sunrise
During sunrise:
The environment begins relatively dark.
Warm colors gradually appear near the horizon.
Orange and golden tones spread through the lower sky.
The sun gradually illuminates nearby clouds.
Environmental brightness increases smoothly.
Shadows change as the sun rises.
The transition should be gradual and atmospheric.
6.2 Sunset
During sunset:
The sunlight becomes warmer.
The sky transitions through orange, pink, and violet tones.
The sky, terrain, and water should all respond to the same lighting conditions.
6.3 Cinematic Color Palette
Element
Recommended Color
Sunlight
Golden yellow
Horizon
Orange and soft red
Illuminated clouds
Gold, orange, and pink
Upper sky
Deep blue and violet
Cloud shadows
Muted violet-gray
Water reflections
Gold and warm orange
Distant atmosphere
Soft pink and purple
These colors should be adjustable to support different artistic preferences.
7. Night Sky, Moon, and Stars
The nighttime environment should feel deep, atmospheric, and visually appealing.
Nighttime lighting should remain weaker than daylight while allowing players to see enough of their surroundings.
7.1 Moon Rendering
The moon should feature:
A clearly visible shape.
Controlled brightness.
A subtle atmospheric halo.
Appropriate positioning in the sky.
Support for lunar phases where possible.
Moonlight should be noticeably weaker than direct sunlight.
Its color can be slightly cool to complement the nighttime environment.
7.2 Stars
Stars should be distributed naturally throughout the night sky.
They should feature:
Different sizes.
Different brightness levels.
Subtle variation in appearance.
A natural distribution pattern.
Controlled visibility according to atmospheric conditions.
Stars should not be distributed in a perfectly uniform pattern, as this can make the sky look artificial.
7.3 Milky Way Effect
An optional Milky Way effect could add a faint, broad band of stars across the sky.
This feature should remain subtle enough to complement Minecraft's visual style rather than dominate it.
7.4 Nighttime Brightness
Nighttime should be darker than daytime.
Open landscapes may receive subtle illumination from the moon and sky, while caves and enclosed spaces should remain considerably darker.
The player should be able to adjust nighttime brightness to suit their preferences.
8. Realistic Shadow System
Shadows should provide depth and help define the shape of objects.
8.1 Dynamic Shadows
Shadows should:
Follow the sun's position.
Change direction throughout the day.
Become shorter near midday.
Become longer near sunrise and sunset.
Appear beneath trees and buildings.
Maintain stable positioning as the camera moves.
Shadow quality should be adjustable.
8.2 Soft Shadows
Soft shadows should have natural transitions between illuminated and shaded regions.
Excessively sharp shadows can make the environment appear artificial, while excessively blurred shadows can eliminate important details.
LiteCraft Shader should balance softness, clarity, and performance.
8.3 Foliage Shadows
Trees and vegetation should produce shadows that reflect their shapes.
The system should preserve the characteristic appearance of Minecraft foliage while improving the lighting around leaves and branches.
8.4 Cloud Shadows
Where supported, moving clouds should gradually change the illumination of the terrain.
The transition should be smooth, avoiding visible flickering or abrupt brightness changes.
9. Atmospheric and Volumetric Fog
Fog should improve environmental depth rather than simply place a uniform gray layer over the entire scene.
9.1 Forest Fog
Forests may feature subtle fog between trees.
The fog should:
Become more noticeable at greater distances.
Preserve nearby visibility.
Respond to lighting conditions.
Use colors that complement the surrounding environment.
9.2 Mountain Fog
Mountain environments should use atmospheric perspective to make distant peaks appear lighter and less detailed.
This creates a greater sense of scale.
9.3 Morning Mist
A subtle layer of mist near the ground can make early mornings more atmospheric.
The mist should remain relatively thin and should not obstruct navigation.
9.4 Cave Fog
Subtle cave fog can increase the perceived depth of underground environments.
It should be carefully controlled to preserve visibility.
9.5 Volumetric Fog
Advanced volumetric fog can make light beams visible in the atmosphere.
Examples include:
Sunlight passing through forest trees.
Light shafts in misty valleys.
Subtle illumination inside large caves.
Volumetric fog can be computationally expensive, so it should be optional on lower-end hardware.
10. God Rays and Light Shafts
Light shafts can create a cinematic appearance when implemented carefully.
Potential uses include:
Sunlight passing through tree branches.
Light beams appearing through morning mist.
Sunlight entering dark environments.
Warm light shafts near the horizon during sunset.
The effect should respond to the position of the sun.
It should not appear equally strong throughout the entire scene.
For performance reasons, LiteCraft Shader should allow players to disable the effect or reduce its quality.
11. Rain and Thunderstorms
Weather conditions should influence lighting, clouds, fog, and water.
11.1 Rainy Weather
During rain:
The sky should become darker.
Direct sunlight should decrease.
Clouds should become grayer.
Water surfaces should appear more active.
Environmental reflections should change.
Atmospheric fog may become more noticeable.
The transitions between sunny and rainy conditions should be smooth.
11.2 Wet Surface Appearance
Where the rendering pipeline supports it, selected surfaces can appear slightly wetter during rainfall.
This effect should be selective and restrained.
Making every block equally reflective would produce an artificial appearance.
11.3 Thunderstorms
During thunderstorms:
The sky should become significantly darker.
Clouds should become denser.
Environmental illumination should decrease.
Rain should become more visually prominent.
Fog may become stronger.
Lightning should briefly illuminate the environment when it occurs.
Lightning effects should correspond to actual weather events in the game.
12. Snowy Environments
Snow-covered landscapes should have lighting that reflects their distinctive surface properties.
Recommended features include:
Stronger reflected environmental light.
Natural shadows across snowy terrain.
Cooler lighting during overcast weather.
Atmospheric fog in distant snowy landscapes.
Appropriate color balance between snow and sky.
Snow should not become completely white and lose all surface detail.
Directly illuminated snow can appear bright white, while shaded areas may contain subtle blue or gray tones.
13. Forests and Vegetation
Forests should feel more immersive through improved lighting, shadows, and atmospheric depth.
Recommended features include:
Natural shadows beneath trees.
Sunlight filtering through foliage.
Subtle fog between distant trees.
Lighting that changes throughout the day.
Appropriate brightness beneath dense vegetation.
Preservation of the original colors and textures of leaves.
The objective is to enhance the existing vegetation rather than unnecessarily replace its textures.
14. Caves and Underground Environments
Caves should feel darker, deeper, and more atmospheric than the surface world.
14.1 Cave Lighting
Torches should illuminate nearby surfaces.
Light intensity should decrease with distance.
Nearby walls should appear brighter than distant walls.
Unlit areas should remain dark.
Lava should emit warm orange and reddish illumination.
14.2 Darkness and Visibility
Lighting should preserve the distinction between illuminated and unlit areas.
However, darkness should not make ordinary gameplay unnecessarily difficult.
Players should have access to adjustable cave brightness where technically possible.
15. Cinematic Post-Processing
Post-processing can improve the final image when used carefully.
15.1 Bloom
Bloom creates a soft glow around very bright objects.
Potential applications include:
The sun.
The moon.
Bright light sources.
Strong highlights on water.
Bloom intensity should be adjustable.
Excessive bloom should be avoided because it can obscure details.
15.2 Color Grading
Color grading should adapt the overall appearance to the environment.
Examples include:
Balanced, natural colors during the day.
Warm colors during sunset.
Cooler tones at night.
Reduced saturation during heavy rain.
The objective is to improve visual consistency without making blocks appear unnaturally colored.
15.3 Depth of Field
Depth of field can blur parts of the image according to their distance from the camera.
It is particularly useful for cinematic screenshots and visual demonstrations.
However, it should be optional during ordinary gameplay because it can make distant objects harder to see.
15.4 Contrast
Contrast should make the difference between light and shadow clear without destroying details in either region.
Both highlights and shadows should retain useful visual information.
16. Preserving Minecraft's Original Art Style
Despite the realistic lighting, LiteCraft Shader should preserve Minecraft's recognizable appearance.
Important principles include:
Maintaining the block-based geometry.
Preserving original textures unless changes are necessary.
Avoiding excessive distortion of block colors.
Improving water without making it look disconnected from the game.
Using lighting to create depth rather than changing every surface.
Keeping the overall image visually consistent.
The final result should still unmistakably look like Minecraft, only with more sophisticated lighting and atmospheric effects.
17. Performance Optimization for Low-End Computers
Performance is essential, particularly on older graphics cards.
Expensive effects such as volumetric fog, high-resolution shadows, and advanced water reflections can significantly reduce frame rates.
LiteCraft Shader should therefore offer several quality presets.
Low Quality
Recommended settings:
Simplified shadows.
Basic water reflections.
Volumetric fog disabled.
Minimal post-processing.
Reduced auxiliary texture resolution.
Simplified lighting calculations.
Limited use of expensive effects.
The priority should be stable performance.
Medium Quality
Recommended settings:
Improved shadows.
Animated water waves.
Moderate reflection quality.
More detailed clouds.
Balanced lighting effects.
Selective post-processing.
This preset should provide a balance between visual quality and performance.
High Quality
Recommended settings:
Higher-resolution shadows.
More advanced water reflections.
Improved cloud depth.
Enhanced atmospheric effects.
More detailed lighting.
Higher-quality color grading.
Ultra Quality
For powerful graphics cards, the shader can offer:
Advanced reflection techniques.
Higher-resolution shadows.
More sophisticated volumetric fog.
Enhanced light shafts.
More detailed atmospheric rendering.
Higher-quality post-processing.
Not every effect will be supported equally by every graphics pipeline, so the implementation must account for the capabilities of the target environment.
Important: More effects do not automatically produce better graphics. Good lighting, carefully balanced colors, and efficient rendering often matter more than simply enabling every available effect.
18. User-Configurable Graphics Settings
Players should be able to customize LiteCraft Shader according to their hardware and preferences.

Whenever possible, each major effect should be independently configurable.
This allows players to improve specific visual features without sacrificing performance unnecessarily.
19. Minecraft Compatibility
LiteCraft Shader must be tested against its intended Minecraft version and rendering environment.
Compatibility depends on the graphics features supported by the selected shader loader and rendering pipeline.
Important considerations include:
Compatibility with the target game version.
Compatibility with the intended shader loader.
Availability of required graphics features.
Support for different graphics cards.
Performance at different screen resolutions.
Correct rendering of water transparency.
Correct shadow behavior.
Stable sky and cloud rendering.
Avoidance of graphical artifacts.
Advanced effects cannot automatically be transferred between every rendering environment.
For example, advanced water reflections may require rendering capabilities that are unavailable or implemented differently in another environment.
Compatibility testing should therefore be part of the development process.
